How does one know the final conclusions of a research
project before it is completed? How does one know that
the conclusions are valid and well-founded before they
have been accepted for publication in a legitimate
technical journal?
It is unwise to make such premature announcements in
the popular press and internet blogs. Moreover, as
Jose said, the title is grossly misleading. Even if
the premature claim is correct, it is chicken treated
with hormones, and not just chicken.
More importantly, the solution to the problem is
better regulation of chicken industry, and not just
pure vegetarianism or piscivorism. Hormone and
pesticide-treated vegetables and environmentally
contaminated fish might not be any better.
In any case, like Jose I have many questions about the
basic claims of this incomplete study. The most
pertinent ones are as follows:
1. How did the investigators single out daily chicken
intake as the culprit?
2. How did they single out hormones as the critical
determinant?
3. Did they actually compare the risk between
chicken-eaters, pure vegetarians and pure fish-eaters?
Cheers,
Santosh
