Commencing today 21st September, 2007 Friday, at 1124
hrs in a four day separate simultaneous sessions
ending Monday, 24th September, 2007 --- people from
all walks of life will air their grievances against
one of the world's most powerful institutions. --
World Bank ---before a 15-member Jury, which includes
Arundhati Roy, Aruna Roy, former SC Judge PB Sawant
and Amit Bhaduri at the Jawaharlal Nehru University
Campus New Delhi India.
This unique Independent People's Tribunal on the World
Bank in India, is a political strategy, aimed at
renewing a silenced national debate over neoliberalism
and economic policy.
Opening the deliberations this morning, belatedely
Prof Chamanlal President of the JNU Teachers Union
inaugurated the function followed by Anil Sadgopal who
spoke on Human Rights and Education influence of WB
others were Smitu Kothari etc;
Internationally, this Tribunal is creating critical
dialogue as the World Bank is being re-assessed from
all quarters, including from within.
It has been observed since 1991 under the LPG regime
Liberalisation Privatisation and Globalisation
Government of India --- has slowly but surely changed
its economic policies under the pressure and influence
of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
These market principles pushed by the WTO, the IMF and
the World Bank are now in the last over 16 years
observed to be having a cascading effect on our
production and employment. Eminent personalities viz
Mr. Arun Kumar, an Eminent Economist and Professor at
JNU, Mr. Prashant Bhushan, Mr. Ashok Chaudhary,
General Secretary of the Gramin Mazdoor Union Uttar
Pradesh, Mr. Devinder Sharma, India's prominent food
security expert and several others will make their
presentations before the jury.
There will be die hard representatives of farmers,
dalits tribals women too will have a fair opportunity
to make their presentations.
After these presentations the judges will render
judgments on the validity, utility and effectiveness
of the World Bank policies and projects.
We at South Goa Public Interest Action Group a
registered NGO based in Margao with jurisdiction in
South Goa have been conferred the unique distinction
of representing the State of Goa at this tribunal the
first of its kind in the country.
Mr Wolver C N E Alemao an activist member of our
Group will make a presentation on the influence of the
World Bank policies with special reference to the WB
aided water augmentation programme now finalised for
the State of Goa duly funded by the WB.
The fear that in the coming years prospects of war
over water will lead to eventually pricing potable
consumable water at a premium and its availability
restricted only to a few ----leaving the unfortunate
populace among the downtrodden mainly those involved
in agrarian activities at the mercy of a few ---This
will form the core theme of our presentation.
