There were scores in Britain, over the century past, but Dr. Marshall Pereira
was unique. He was born and raised in Aldona, and sensing the end of what was
a fifty odd year happy life in Liverpool, he 'returned' to his roots : the
cheques arrived before he passed away in 2001, there were more from his wife,
after, for a total of thirty million rupees, to local charities.
Few nations of the early industrial era exploited it's own people more than
Britain did, and the coal mining region of Wales was visited by a special brand
of wrethchedness. I have seen pictures of shoeless children and windowless
hovels: it all changed with the arrival of Attlee's income tax and the death
duty. Those rates paid for National Health, and Council housing, and a rather
decent living for physicians. Dr. Mascarenhas was probably more fortunate than
his counterpart in the Panjim area : L. D., of New York, tells me most pleased
to settle a ten rupee charge for the man's medical consultation. I did ask Lolo
if he paid with a U.S. coin that is commonly known as a 'quarter', and then
get back ten rupees in change. Good luck, Mr. Mascarenhas, and, remember, 20
pence to the vicar who leafs through dusty old pages of dad's church records.
                   eric.
