Preserve mando art
form, says Cardozo

PANJIM: The traditional mando dance is a unique dance form, evolved as a
blend of Indian melody and western tune and every Goan has to ensure the 
promotion
and preservation of this art form, said Tomazinho Cardozo, member of the
General Council of Kala Academy while inaugurating the day long workshop on
Goan Mando dance organized by Kala Academy at the Black Box recently.


The workshop was well attended by around 80 participants wherein different
lecture-demonstrations and practical sessions were staged by experts of mando
dance. Dr. Francisco Colaco made a special presentation on the theoretical part
of the said art form and also the costumes as well as dancing patterns of mando
dance. Dr. Colaco extended his compliments to Kala Academy
for organizing the workshop which is of prime importance for preservation of
traditional mando. 


Lawrence Fernandes demonstrated how the rhythmic patterns could be provided
with the traditional percussion instrument viz. ghumat.. Fernandes emphasized
on the preservation of ethnic musical patterns and suggested to the Kala Academy
to organize the follow-up sessions of the present workshop.. Timotio Fernandes,
a well known folklorist staged the demonstrations of mando dance and explained
how to stage the traditional art form before the elite audience.
Augustinho  de Cruz, eminent musician gave a demonstration on his rhythm
guitar and explained how to provide musical beats on rhythm guitar as well as
base guitar to maintain the tradition of mando. Earlier, Dr. Pandurang
Phaldesai, Member Secretary of Kala
 Academy stated that in
the era of globalization, every Goan has to take care for maintaining our own
identity through the preservation of traditional art forms, those which have
enriched our heritage. Dr. Phaldesai also declared that Kala Academy
will organize more workshops towards the follow-up action and will also explore
the possibilities of organizing a festival of traditional Mando Dance with the
participation of traditional groups from Salcete area. He also offered to
provide infrastructural facilities for practicing mando singing and dancing for
participation in the forth coming all Goa
mando dance competition organized by Goa Cultural and Social Centre. Issac
Dias, Vice President and Octavio Rodrigues, General Secretary of Goa Cultural
and Social Centre expressed their views
