It's sometimes, a mouse or a frog or another animal, but the scorpion sometimes is replaced by a spider or a snake. You get the picture, a hunter & a prey animal. There lived in a desert, a rat & a scorpion side by side. One day the rain fell heavily & flooded the oasis nearby where they lived, the water came up quite high so the two decided to run from it, they climbed as high as they could but were stranded on the sandbank with water all around them. The scorpion could not swim, the rat could. But as they were friends of sorts the rat said he would give the scorpion a lift on his back so he would swim to safety. The rat was a bit dubious about this offer he made to the scorpion, having him on his back was a bit scary, so he asked the scorpion if he will behave himself & not sting him. The scorpion replied that his friend was foolish, he would not do such a stupid thing, after all he was his friend & as his friend was helping to safe him from a watery grave, he would promise to be his friend, always. So the rat allowed his good friend to climb on top of his back & they slowly entered the water. All was going well and about half-way through their ordeal, the scorpion suddenly raised his tail and with an almightly thrust, his placed his venomous stink right into the back of the rat's neck. The rat was startled & cried out, "Why did you sting me, I am feeling dizzy & losing the power of my legs to swim any further, we will now both die............." The scorpion replied "I am so sorry, it was my nature..............." John Monteiro Berkshire, England
