The jubilee year will be inaugurated on October 2, 2007 with the Archbishop Rev Felipe Neri Ferrao presiding over a thanksgiving mass at Pilar.Announcing this at a press conference today, the editor of Vavraddeancho Ixtt Fr Ubaldo Fernandes said a variety cultural programme with folk songs and typical Goan dances will be held on October 20 at the Agnel Ashram, Verna, where the chief minister Mr Digambar Kamat will be the chief guest. All through the year, seminars and competitions will be conducted for the youth in a variety of subjects including short stories, poems, tiatr, music and songs, journalism, cartoons and one-act plays. Selected write-ups of the contestants will be published in the form of a book. The organisers will also compile a quality CD of Goan folk songs which will include traditional mandos, dulpods and deknnis by the musicians of Goa from the mid 1800 to mid 1900. A CD on short stories and poems will also be compiled in order that Konkani speaking people of Goa and other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala, who use and read only Roman or Devnagari or Kanada can have access to, understand and enjoy it. An award distribution function for the various participants will be held at the end of the year. Vavranddeancho Ixtt, which started in 1932, today has a readership of around 11,000. Fr Fernandes said its founding fathers had a clear aim in mind to guide the Goan people in proper Christian values specially against communism and anticlericalism and to make the government aware of the same as well. Today as ever before, Vavraddeancho Ixtt is in the only flag-bearer of the Konkani language and the voice of the voiceless, he said.
