In 2001 Dr M M Joshi introduced Astrology as a subject
in UGC. Predictably all hell broke loose and the usual
suspects started making all the regular noises about
fascism, hindu supremacy and RSS and all

fray and criticised
the govt for introducing Astrology as a SCIENCE
subject in UGC
Most mainstream english press screamed that a fraud
was being perpetrated on India and as usual the RSS
was villified.
But the facts of the case were quite different and the
real story was downed in the din created primarily by
the marxists and their "secular" lackeys.
FIRST and FOREMOST, Astrology was introduced NOT as
SCIENCE but AS ART subject. The degrees to be awarded
were BA MA and PhD nor BSc and MSc.
Since Astrology is called JyotirVigyan the press
mischeveosly created the impression that astrology was
being offered as a science subject and almost managed
to convince people that the regular scientific
curriculum was being replaced. It is unfortunate that
this canard wasnt exposed early on and even scientists
like Narlikar didnt raise this issue.
Joshi was not even the first one to start such a
course of study as was widely insinuated. JyotirVigyan
was being offered in as many 20 universities (obscure
but still functioning universities) in India ALL as
ART subject and NOT SCIENCE as well as many foreign
universities including ones in USA, UK ,Switzerland
etc for many years.
Further more,holding that the teaching of jyotir
vigyan can under no circumstances be equated with
teaching of any particular religion, the Bench of
former Chief Justice of India S. Rajendra Babu, who
relinquished the office on June 1, and Mr Justice G.P.
Mathur in its verdict said: We are of the opinion
that the challenge made to the inclusion of the
subject as a course of study on the ground that the
same will violate or impinge upon the concept of
secularism enshrined in the Constitution has no merit
and must be rejected.
Be it the Astrology issue or the Christian
"persecution" issue, SC and HC judgements are only
valid for these "secularists" if they are useful.
Yet certain vested interests in India who take every
opportunity to villify and ridicule everything related
to Hindu culture created such amounts of confusion
that all these facts were basically lost in the din.
They had succesfully managed to convince a large
section of "formally educated" "rational" yet naive
people that M M Joshi , himself a top physicist, had
somehow conspired to replace traditional science with
some junk because he was a Hindu supremacist.
Music,history, journalism, philosophy, political
science etc are all being taught for so many years in
our universities None of these disciplines are
classified as science and rightly so. There may be
some scientific basis to a few of them but no one ever
protested that Political Science is being offered as a
Science course,because it was not.Theology is nothing
but superstition for some yet there are so many
renowned theology schools which even give degrees in
Bible Studies
Many of these schools are in the US, arguably one of
the most technologically advanced countries in the
world. If the US could achieve so much scientific
progress inspite of having so many schools of theology
why can not Science and Astrology co-exist in Indian
curriculum
This whole fiasco is conveniently cited by all these
"secularists" in their blogs and elsewhere simply
because it nicely suits their nefarious design to
denigrate Hindu culture. Unfortunately for them, it is
not the Truth.
