As for Alaric Gomes's case, I am informed that even his own team manager and
most of the team members did not want him to play for Goa Velha Al Zuari. They
felt his medical condition was a risk for Alaric to play in a competitive
tournament, though he is does play at training or practice matches. Mind you,
Alaric is equipped with a pacemaker and though he is said to have brought a
medical fitness certificate there was a consensus among team managers and the
committee members that Alaric should not
be given a chance to play for risk of any serious or fatal injury on the ground.
Taking this point further, I am surprised why the committee asked him to
produce a medical fitness certificate in the first place. At the same time,
Alaric has played in seven-a-side tournaments. Did the committee think that the
medical certificate is fake? Or is it, as Cedric says, an act of vengeance by
the committee for Gulf News's boycott of the tournament? I believe that the
committee gets the teams to sign papers saying the committee is not responsible
for any injuries to players. So why was the committee so concerned about
Alaric? Though Cedric has said it was the tournament committee who wanted to
who wanted to keep Alaric out, it would be helpful to find out if the team
manager also wanted Alaric not to play. Perhaps Cedric has access to the team
manager and he can provide me the team manager's name and mobile number. Or,
for that matter, by anyone on this forum.
I am told that the Al Zuari's team manager did not attend the meeting of all
team managers because one of his family members was in the Intensive Care Unit
of an hospital. Was this a convenient excuse? Was there no other person to
represent the team? Somehow I do not have total faith in this comittee. See how
the committee got Bonnie involved again. Was it the fear that Bonnie would
again conduct the rival tournament that made them accommodate Bonnie again?
As for the tournament itself, it has now entered an interesting stage -- the
quarters. One may be able to see better action than what has been seen in the
league stage. On Tuesday, St. Anthony's Siolim and Cansaulim drew goalless.
Cansaulim is a much better team on paper but somehow it has clicked. They bring
the ball well up almost to the rival's penalty box but then run out of ideas
how to convert. They play a slow-paced game with lot of square passes and an
occassional diagonal through pass.
As for St. Anthony's Siolim, the onus of attack falls on Pittu (Peter), a
livewire forward who is everywhere. A little better control and a little less
selfishness could help the team in the next round when they meet their
fellow-gaunkars, FC Siolim. This clash ensures that one Siolim team will be in
the semi-finals.
Vaxim Divar will be re-enforced with the addition of another new player for its
quarter-final clash against Navelim Clipsel, Cansaulim will meet Fr.Agnel
Pilar, and Benaulim will meet Aldona United.
As for new players coming to join the team at the quarter-final stage, some
questions have been raised. I am told there are no written rules and
regulations. As for the new player coming for Vaxim Divar, was he
pre-registered or is there a "rule" or understanding among team managers that a
fixed quota of players can be substituted during the league stage or in the
next stage? And if there are written rules and regulations, could I ask the
committee members to provide me with a copy. I know that some committee members
are either members of Goanet or read it regularly.
