Mopa gets going again

BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, OCT 8 — Even though the high-powered committee constituted to decide on
the airport issue for Goa is yet to submit its report, moves are on to re-start
the process of land acquisition for the proposed international airport at Mopa.

Herald has learnt that an order has been issued by the Secretary Revenue dated
September 11, 2007 to the Collector North Goa to re-start the process.

Data furnished on earlier occasions indicate that around 50 lakh sq mt land has
already been acquired.

According to officials, the entire process initiated earlier and notified has
lapsed as no awards were issued nor was possession taken of part area acquired
in the first phase.

Officials state that as the surveys and demarcations had already been carried
out last time, land acquisition now would not take more than five to six months
and could also be completed in one phase if the government so desires.

It is proposed to acquire 86 lakh sq mt of land for the new airport at Mopa,
less than what was proposed to be acquired one-and-a-half year back.

While Mopa is likely to be an election issue for the forthcoming by-polls in
South Goa, election officials said that the election code
would not apply to the process of land acquisition as it is in North Goa
District.
