DREDGE THE RIVER SAL
Eduardo Pinto, Margao
There is a controversey going on whether the River Sal should be dredged or
not, in. this connection I would like to state that I am a resident of
Pedda ward of Margao which is very close to the River Sal, and I remember
very well that in my childhood around 70 years ago, the River Sal was
regularly dredged and there was a dredging boat which I was popularly called
‘CHIKOL BOAT which was permanently stationed in River Sal during the
Portuguese time for the purpose of regular dredging of the river,

At that time the transportation of goods like tiles, coconuts and other items
from Margao to Karwar etc. was done by big boats with sails which were called
‘Patmareo’ and they used to easily come upto the Khareaband bridge, as
the river was regularly dredged. However, presently due to the heavy silting
of the river, even a small boat cannot come, and dredging is absolutely
necessary which would also ease the pressure of road transport. A portion of
the river from Borda to Khareaband has been dredged sometime back which has
even avoided flooding of the area during the monsoon time. To add to the
scene, new pollutants like plastics etc. are also dumped.
This has aggravates the matter still further. Because of the silting of this
fiver, the flooding also takes place with water coming on the roads leading
to Benaulim, area etc. and during summer months water hyacinth further
aggravates the problem and the Captain of Ports has not taken any steps to
remedy the same, as a result River Salst has been Seduced to a small drain.
Therefore I appeal to the concerned authorities to do the needful by dredging
the River Sal and help save our environment before it is too late.
