Dear Rajan,
Reading your piece I could sense and feel your angst and feelings about the
deterioration of Goa. While I am happy that you have taken the initiative to
awaken the people of Goa to the state of affairs prevailing there, I am not
sure how far the deterioration has already taken place and how we can at this
point arrest further degradation.
To my mind, we goans are first and foremost responsible for this state of
affairs. We have elected corrupt politicians and keep re-electing them
repeatedly. We need to build a people's movement without getting into caste,
communal conflicts. There are different types of 'bhaille's'. Those who have
come and settled down in Goa because they love Goa. These people though not of
goan origin need to be incorporated in the movement. Then there are the
labourers who have come because they need the jobs which we goans are not
willing to do.We should ensure that their employers provide them with proper
housing and sanitation. We need them because they serve us.Then are those who
have come to Goa to deal in real estate and make profits. This is the category
which is largely responsible for the degradation of Goa. They do not love Goa
but love money and if they can rape Goa to make money they will do so.
Awareness of the degradation of Goa should be spread all across Goa and
especially in those places where there is large scale construction and
destruction taking place. Secondly, we should use the RTI act to good effect.
Thirdly, petitions should be filed in the courts wherever any illegality is
noticed.Fourthly, the goan youth need employment or self-employment skills to
stop them from from leaving Goa. Generally Companies which have set up in Goa
do not employ goans as they find them lazy and easy going. Unless we can
inculcate good and positive values in our youth, I am afraid we are going to
fight a losing battle. Perhaps Pravin Sabnis and his ilk could contribute here.
More importantly we need to preserve the way of life and the peace and harmony
which made Goa what it is and makes us all nostalgic. There is too much
communal venom being spread and unless we raise our our voices and protest, Goa
is going to go the way of UP.
In conclusion, I support your efforts wholeheartedly and being based outside
Goa, I can only wish you every success.
Cheers!!!
Marshall
