Gadgil had written a nice piece about sanity amidst madness. Now, I consider
Goanet a microcosm of the world at large. It frightens me no end that the
majority of Hindu voices on this forum tend to be shrill and extreme and that
only a handful are moderate and discerning. If this is a reflection of how
Hindus feel in India, then we as Indians are in trouble indeed.

Selma please do not fall into the trap set up by the sangh parivar. Vast
majority of all Indians whether Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christians are secular
in their thinking and way of life. That is why the country has held together. It
is a miniscule minority which form the fringes of Hindu society who are very
vocal and assertive who keep on making their voices heard and convey the
impression that they represent the Hindus. No Hindu to my knowledge has given
them the mandate or appointed them as their representatives. Yet they keep on
stating lies like Goebelles again and again that they speak for the Hindus and
thus convey the wrong impression that all Hindus hold similar views. From afar,
this may seem so. But if you happen to interact with the local people, you will
find a different story.
These Hindu extremists will flood the media through sms's, emails, letters etc.
giving the impression that they speak for the majority. However in states where
the governments have been firm, they are like mice. Under Laloo Prasad Yadav,
Bihar a state with a large muslim population, there was relative communal peace
throughout his tenure. In West Bengal and Kerala again which have large muslim
populations communal strife has been rare.
Unfortunately, barring the communist parties most of all the other parties and
especially the Congress have played the communal game whenever it suited them.
Cheers!!!
