Nominating Catholic not an experiment: Parrikar
BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, OCT 12 — BJP leader Manohar Parrikar has said
the decision to field a Catholic on its banner is not
really an experiment, but a signal to the minorities
that the BJP is now ready to take all segments of the
people with the party.
He further said though the BJP would not treat the
ensuing polls as a referendum on the Kamat government,
but the party would take the bye-polls as a fight
against the Congress and its “inefficient” government.
When newsmen asked him whether Dr Wilfred Mesquita is
an experiment for the BJP in South Goa, Parrikar said
“no, it is not an experiment. We want to send a right
signal that the BJP want to take all sections with the
party”.
Returning out of the office the Returning Officer
after Dr Mesquita filed his nomination for the
Mormugao Lok Sabha seat, Parrikar expressed
satisfaction that the percentage of Catholics voting
for the BJP has been increasing in recent times.
“Though the percentage is not huge, slowly but surely
members of the minority community are joining the BJP
ranks despite the Congress propaganda of dubbing the
BJP communal”.
When newsmen asked him whether his statement to
resolve the script row is to woo the minorities,
Parrikar shot back “I am capable enough to resolve the
script issue. When a large section of a community is
using a particular script, it definitely needs
support”, but declined to comment when asked whether
he would amend the Official Language Act to bestow
status for Roman script.
Asked whether the denial of Congress ticket for PWD
Minister, Churchill Alemao’s lawyer daughter, Valanka
would have an impact on the Kamat government, Parrikar
said “the present government has been unstable since
long. Even the present equations in the Assembly does
not favour the BJP”, but said the BJP would not do
anything to destablise or throw out the Kamat
government.
