India: Violence Mars Goa Final 15/10/2007 07:25 All hell broke loose in the final of the Goa Professional Football League between Dempo and Churchill Brothers as coaches and fans attacked the referee.
When referee Angelo Fernandes didnt point to the spot after Churchill Brothers striker Odafa Okolie fell in the Dempo box just five minutes from time, Churchill Brothers manager Denzil hit the referee. It was the final of the Vodafone Goa Professional Football League and the spectators had come in large numbers on Sunday to support their teams. Dempo scored two goals through Clifton and Chidi Edeh while Churchills sole goal came from prolific striker Odafa Okolie. Churchill were trailing 2-1 in the 85th minute when Odafa clashed with Dempo custodian Tyson. The former stayed down and manager Denzil came to attend him. Thereafter, Denzil hit the referees head from behind. The match continued with the referee placing his hand over his head in pain. Once, the final whistle was blown the supporters and some officials of Churchill Brothers attacked the referee mercilessly. The referee ran for his life but still was kicked and beaten. It was a shameful scene. The referee was right in not awarding the penalty. It was against the spirit of the game to hit the referee while the match was on. Action must be taken against the club and its officialssaid Dempo centre-back Mahesh Gawli. Speaking to a local newspaper, Mr.Savio Messias, Secretary Goa Football Association (GFA) said: "We have lodged a complaint with the police and the Managing Committee will meet today to decide further action against the club. Meanwhile, there was bad news for the Indian national team as Mahesh Gawli pulled his thigh muscle and was substituted after 65 minutes. Yes, I pulled a muscle in my thigh but I hope to be fit for the Indian camp starting tomorrow, Gawli said.
