India: Violence Mars Goa Final
15/10/2007 07:25

All hell broke loose in the final of the Goa
Professional Football League between Dempo and
Churchill Brothers as coaches and fans attacked the
referee.

When referee Angelo Fernandes didn’t point to the spot
after Churchill Brothers striker Odafa Okolie fell in
the Dempo box just five minutes from time, Churchill
Brothers manager Denzil hit the referee.
It was the final of the Vodafone Goa Professional
Football League and the spectators had come in large
numbers on Sunday to support their teams.
Dempo scored two goals through Clifton and Chidi Edeh
while Churchill’s sole goal came from prolific striker
Odafa Okolie.
Churchill were trailing 2-1 in the 85th minute when
Odafa clashed with Dempo custodian Tyson.
The former stayed down and manager Denzil came to
attend him. Thereafter, Denzil hit the referee’s head
from behind.
The match continued with the referee placing his hand
over his head in pain. Once, the final whistle was
blown the supporters and some officials of Churchill
Brothers attacked the referee mercilessly.
The referee ran for his life but still was kicked and
beaten.
“It was a shameful scene. The referee was right in not
awarding the penalty. It was against the spirit of the
game to hit the referee while the match was on. Action
must be taken against the club and its officials”said
Dempo centre-back Mahesh Gawli.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Mr.Savio Messias,
Secretary Goa Football Association (GFA) said: "We
have lodged a complaint with the police and the
Managing Committee will meet today to decide further
action against the club.”
Meanwhile, there was bad news for the Indian national
team as Mahesh Gawli pulled his thigh muscle and was
substituted after 65 minutes. “Yes, I pulled a muscle
in my thigh but I hope to be fit for the Indian camp
starting tomorrow,” Gawli said.
