Sardinha’s promise to legalise bull fights deceitful:
UGDP
NT News Service
Margao, Oct 15 Urging politicians to stop talking
nonsense before the elections, the United Goans
Democratic Party (UGDP) today said Congress candidate,
Mr Francisco Sardinha’s promise to legalise bull
fights was quite “amusing”.
“The promise though alluring is nonetheless false and
deceitful,” Mr Anacleto Viegas, secretary general and
spokesman of UGDP said.
He however said that the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act must and can be changed by the government.
According to Mr Viegas, the Act was in the concurrent
list of the Constitution and any amendment to it can
be done by the government, except that previous
sanction may be required to change the law.
“Mr Sardinha must take the trouble to study the legal
position before trying to fool the people just before
the elections with his tall promise,” the secretary
general said.
He urged the GPCC president to direct the government
to move an amendment and make ‘dhirios’ an exception
to the rule of law (i.e. the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act).
The opposition to such an amendment was based on
misconception of the true nature of dirios, he said.
