selma,
Pakistan is in the position it is because of US interference in its politics.
The US has always been behind the Generals who have seized power. In fact, the
Generals could not have remained in power without the backing of the US. The
current US administration is currently boasting that it forced Busharraf to
accept Bhutto back. Musharraf is now expendable. Bhutto has promised "close
ties with the US."
India politicians till recently could not see further than their bank accounts.
SIngh may have the insight to seize the moment but as long as he has to contend
with a coalition that includes extremist, I do not think he is in a position to
achieve whats almost available.
