22 injured in chemical leak at scrapyard

HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MAPUSA, OCT 24 – Twenty-two persons, including two infants and two children,
were injured when they came in contact with a hazardous chemical at a scrap
yard at Karaswada, here on Tuesday afternoon. Five of them are reported to be
in a serious condition.

According to police reports, a truck collected about 70 barrels from a factory
at Dhargal and offloaded them at the scrapyard, owned by one Yasr Mohammed on
Tuesday.

At about 1 pm, the 18 labourers began cutting the barrels, when they noticed
obnoxious fumes being released from the barrels and began to feel some burning
sensation. The labourers, however, continued their work after lunch without
realizing that they were dealing with a hazardous chemical.

By evening, the labourers and the children at the site struggled for breath and
the burning sensation spread all over their bodies.

The labourers along with the children were rushed to a private hospital.

Police went to the scrapyard and found the disassembled barrels of Dymethyl
Sulphate lying in the scraypard. The barrels contained labels, stating that the
contents in the barrels were hazardous chemicals.
