Dear Selma, Virginity of the spinster is not an issue. It is not the proverbial "Big issue about a small piece of tissue." Forensic science has advance since the time when the doctors discovered seven little dents on the Maidenhead of Goldilocks!
Obviously, the type of evidence that a molested boy child will leave behind will be different from the type of evidence one would expect from a healthy sexual relationahip with an adult male ..... for love or money. The tuition teacher [she is NOT a school teacher as per information so far available] is an accused, not a convict. The learned Judge and a three women jury will decide. The Children's Court is different from other Courts in India. Rina Ray, as the then Secretary for Women and Child Development, has worked hard to put better systems in place through the Goa Children's Act. When there was alleged to be a rape of a major girl in Goa College of Art [it was later proved to be a false accusation in court, and appealed by neither the state nor any otther individual/agency/NGO], women's organisation such as the Bailancho Saad had even demanded that the accused boys be castrated. No man's organisation, if there is one outside YMCA, has demanded anything similar so far. So how come you label men as misogynists? Or are you talking of the law enforcing agencies? Police Inspector C.L. Patil, who has just been transferred to Colva-Benaulim, is good at investigative work. He will have information on this soon. You are right about Paedophilia being a sickness. We need to ascertain whether this tuition teacher has it ...or whther she has just opted for the easier alternative due to lack of access to professional services in Goa. May she she is not net savvy, either. In a major tourist destination like Goa everything is available at a price. Even a toute at a beach side shack can be a fountain of information ...often better than the Lonely Planet and other books put together, and chaeper than all of them. Mog asundi. Really? ------------------------------------------ I'm so disheartened by this story. On the one hand if the woman in question did molest this child then she has to pay the full penalty under the law. On the other hand, it seems to have brought to the fore all the misogynistic assumptions made by our society. Much has been made of the fact that this woman is a 40 year old spinster. Pedophilia is not a disease born out of deprivation but a sickness of the mind, and hence a 40 year old married woman with 10 children could be just as susceptible to it as a unmarried 40 year old. Secondly, why is the assumption made that the spinster is a virgin. Could she not be engaged in a healthy sexual relationship with a man outside of marriage? How will an "examination of her body" prove "assault" on the child? Is this the sort of evidence we are depending on to prove our cases in Goa these days? If so, I am afraid very afraid for our society.
