Scrap SEZs if against interest of Goans, Eduardo tells govt
BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, OCT 28 Former MP Eduardo and NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro has asked the Goa government to carefully weigh the pros and cons of SEZ and favoured scrapping of the SEZs if it goes against the interests of Goa and Goans. Addressing a Congress meeting at Lohia Maidan in support of Francisco Sardinha, Faleiro cautioned the government that land cannot expand and underlined the need to save Goa. He asked Chief Minister Minister, Digambar Kamat to conduct a study on SEZ and its implications and ascertain the profit and loss for Goans. The profit can be guaged by ascertaining how many Goans will get jobs in the SEZ, he said. To ascertain the loss SEZs would cause to Goa, Faleiro suggested to the government to first find out how much land is available for SEZ and whether Goa would be able to provide power and water and manage the garbage generated in the SEZs. Infrastructural facilities for SEZs should be taken into account while giving permissions. And, it is found that SEZs are not feasible for Goa, scrap it, he asserted. Faleiro, however, praised the Chief Minister for taking a public stand that the SEZs would be reviewed in the best interest of the state. Later in his address, Chief MInister Digambar Kamat assured that his government would not take any decision on SEZs which would go against the interests of the state Any decision on SEZs would be taken after weighing the pros and cons, he said, adding that the government is in favour of reviewing the SEZs in Goa. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=3521&cid=26 Sanny de Quepem <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
