Wooden ramps at polling booths for disabled ready to be erected!
BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, OCT 29 If you find many a polling station without a wooden ramp to facilitate easy accessibility for the disabled and handicapped, hold on. If election authorities are to be believed, the wooden ramps are ready, but have not been erected near the polling station for fear of thefts. In fact, many a wooden ramp which were erected at the polling stations during the June 2 Assembly polls had mysteriously disappeared after the PWD officials did not deemed it fit to remove them after the polls. It was only after the Election Commission announced dates for the bye-polls, realisation dawned on the PWD as well as the local election officials that wooden ramps erected at some of the polling stations had gone missing. This had forced the election authorities to direct the PWD to order new ramps, but the ramps have not yet erected for fear of thefts. And, if Assistant Electoral Officer Venancio Furtado is to be believed, then the ramps will be erected only on the eve of the bye-polls. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=3576&cid=26 Sanny de Quepem <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
