Churchill Alemao - Epitome of the dark side of Goan Politics !

Fr. Peter Fernandes

The dawn of Churchill Alemao on the center stage of Goan politics began with a promise and bright hope for the people and the state of Goa, but of late, has been marred with controversies galore. A statesman is a person who has a vision for his people and for the land. Such a person carries with him the sentiments of the people, the culture, and traditions and commits himself to use the resources of the land for the good of his community, at all cost. What an inspiration !

Churchill, at times, pretends to play the role of a statesman, but falls short, more often than not. Yet, his voice resounds loud and clear in every nook and corner of the state of Goa. He masquerades as one sincerely interested in serving those in need or espousing the genuine needs of 'Goans' thus creating waves of excitement; but history has proved this is only to gain political mileage. What a shame !

Our people are easily deceived by simple donations and favors to individuals and groups, when elections draw near. In fact, we need someone in the government who is astute and discerning, able to think wisely in forming policies for the wellbeing of all. But, Goans, it appears, are content with nepotism, rather than the noble character of prospective politicians. What a sad story to be told in this day and age!

Political office is a noble duty, and a privilege, to which only honorable citizens should aspire. For the last few decades, this office has been desecrated by our elected representatives from all political parties. Nevertheless, the citizens are also responsible for the downfall of this office in Goa, as by electing these traitors, we commit the same mistake over and over again. The recent fiasco of our MLAs in the assembly hall bespeaks loud and clear. What a disgrace !

"There are no permanent friends and enemies in politics", says famous Churchill Alemao of Goa. How low can one stoop, and still have the audacity to address the people? The party he was so determined to wipe out from Goa's political sphere, just about three months ago, he is now begging to secure a nomination, for his daughter in the ensuing Lok Shaba bye elections. He led the masses against Mopa airport, until his pockets, many assume, were generously taken care of, that made him a turncoat overnight. What a hypocrite!

Winston Churchill was a true statesman. Churchill Alemao is a charlatan. We, proud Goans, need to rise above the ordinary mire, and seek to live as noble citizens with noble leaders. Let our thoughts be pure to serve our neighbors with love and dignity. Let us not be content with nepotism, and the deception of those who seek to drown Goa in hopeless quagmire. Let's set our sights on honest citizens willing to be public servants, working with integrity toward the wellbeing of the greater community and the state of Goa.
