After taking some respite on the rest day, both Goa's players - Ivana
Furtado and Bhakti Kulkarni - won their games in the seventh round of the
World Youth Chess Championships being played at Antalya, Turkey.
Commonwealth Under 18 Girls Champion Bhakti Kulkarni (ELO 2112) beat
France's Valerie Forgues (ELO 1963). This victory has allowed her to climb
back to joint 9th spot along with two others including her 8th round
opponent - Ukraine's Olga Ivanenko (ELO 2125). A strong finish from Bhakti
in the remaining four rounds will see her finish among the medals and
possibly even in 1st place.
Asian Under 8 Girls Champion Ivana Furtado beat Byelorussian Anastasia
Sialenchyk in the 7th round to come to within half a point of Vietnamese
girl Thanh Thuy Tien Nguyen who leads the table with 6 points. Defending
champ Ivana shares 2nd spot with 5 others including Turkish girl Buse
Vatansever who is her opponent in the 8th round. To defend her World Under 8
title, a victory here and another loss by the Vietnamese girl will see Ivana
among the leaders and well placed for victory in the championship.
Dronacharya awardee Raghunandan Gokhale, who is coaching both Ivana and
Bhakti, stated that the girls are well rested now and eager to keep the
flags of Goa and India flying high. He expressed confidence that atleast one
if not both the girls will come back with a medal in this prestigious event!
