Head injuries due to road mishaps highest in Goa, says GMC dean


Panaji, Nov 26 The dean of the Goa Medical College, Dr V N Jindal, has said that according to population ratio, Goa has the highest number of cases with head injuries, particularly due to road accidents and they formed the highest number of patients treated by the neurosurgery department at the Goa Medical College and Hospital. One an average over 200 operations for treating head injuries are performed every year at the GMC, he said.

Addressing a press conference to announce year-long programmes to mark the celebrations of silver jubilee year of neurosurgery department, Dr Jindal said that though Goa had a large number of cases that required neurosurgery treatment, the number of neurosurgeons in Goa was just five.

He also said that other cases at the department were surgeries (procedures) for treatment of brain tumours, brain haemoerrhage, brain infections, spine problems, brain lesions, congenital defects of brain and spines, etc. He further said that procedures to treat cerebral palsy would be started at GMC soon.

Saying that neurosurgery department has played a major role in educating public on preventive aspects of avoidable head injuries in accidents that were either caused by drunken or rash and negligent riding of two wheelers, he said that most of the victims were found not wearing helmets.

The GMC dean also said that neurosurgery department has created awareness among Goans on preventive aspects of avoidable head injuries in accidents that were either cause of drunken or rash and negligent riding of two-wheelers without wearing helmets in particular.

He further said that the department had also conducted public awareness programmes on the risk of undercooked or uncooked pork that causes neurocysticercosis, adding that it also found out prevalence of a number of such cases in some parts of Goa. Dr Jindal also said that there were just about 700 specialists in the neurosurgery in the country, which has a population of over 102 crore and the number of neurosurgeons in Goa was just five in Goa. He also said that Japan with a population of 12.5 crore had 7,000 neurosurgeons of whom 30 per cent were women.
