Goanet mourns the passing of Jorge de Abreu Noronha in Portugal - Nov 27/07

Dear friends
It was with great sadness and disbelief that we learned of the passing away
of a good friend Jorge de Abreu Noronha (b. Goa 29/07/1930, d. Lisbon
27/11/2007).
He dedicated a large part of his life to help others and continued to do so
even in the last days of his life.
He was very much involved in the Goan Association of Lisbon - Casa de Goa -
where he volunteered a great part of his time. He was a member of the Casa
de Goa cultural, music and dance group Ekvat where he used to sing in
Konkani, a language that he loved.
As a person he was a true gentleman and a scholar. I learned so much from
him. His contributions for this and other Goan forums were excellent. He
would never keep quiet about anything he found inaccurate. At the same time
he would turn any criticism into positive construction.
He had told us that he was not well and he had several hospital appointments
in the past months but still he would spend his time to help others in his
local parish Church and in the community around him.
His last great contribution to our Goan community is still to be published.
Jorge was very much involved over the past several months as an Editor and
translator (totally volunteer work without any sort of remuneration present
or future) of Konkani to Portuguese of the works of the great Goan Konkani
poet ManoharRai SarDessai. The book completed just very recently and will be
released in Goa in three different languages - English, French and
Portuguese. My Song - Ma Chanson - O Meu Canto will be available for sale
from end of January in Goa and other parts of the world.
This is the person Jorge was. If he believed in a cause, he would volunteer
for it and would be truly dedicated to it 100%, even in the last days of his
life.
May his example inspire many in our community.
Goa and the Goan community lost a true son. We will miss him tremendously.
Whilst we are very sad that Jorge is no longer with us, we should also
rejoice for Jorge for surely he is already with God enjoying eternal life.
This is our faith. This was what he truly believed.
Now, in true Goan unity, I would like to request that we all observe 3
minutes of silence and prayer tomorrow 29/11/2007 at 14.00 GMT/Lisbon time
when Jorge will be moved from the mortuary chapel of Figueirinha-Oeiras to
the crematorium of the cemetery of Olivais, in Portugal. This is the least
we can do for Jorge since we cannot attend his funeral. At least let us all
be with him, his beloved wife Livia and the rest of his family, in spirit
and in prayer.
