PRESS RELEASE
SEZ Virodhi Manch asks CM to stop all SEZ activity in Goa
A delegation led by Charles Fernandes, co-convenor of SEZ Virodhi Manch,
called on Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on November 28th, 2007 to discuss
the stopping of all SEZ activity at Keri and Verna, since the Chief
Minister has decided to review the SEZ policy for Goa and the 24 x 7 work is
causing irrevocable damage to our water table, hills and environment.
The Chief Minister told the delegation that he preferred to adopt the
strategy of appealing to the better instincts of the SEZ developers by
requesting them to stop the work pending the conclusion of the review of the
policy. This he assured the delegation would be done through the Chief
Secretary by Monday 3rd December or Tuesday 4th December, 2007.
Mr. Digambar Kamat as the Chief Minister of the ruling dispensation of the
day, placed the responsibility for the entire SEZ imbroglio on the doorstep
of the previous Congress Government. The SEZ Virodhi Manch pointed out to
Mr. Digambar Kamat, that both the Chief Ministers were two arms of the same
body and therefore could not play the blame game, but should work sincerely
to rectify the mistakes of the Congress led Government in the interests of
preserving Goa for our future generations.
The Central Commerce Minister Mr. Kamal Nath has himself publicly stated
that even notified SEZs could be withdrawn if the people do not want it. It
is abundantly clear and a matter of shame for the aam aadmi of Goa to
understand that their Government, in reality, does not have the political
will to protect their interests and the interests of Goa.
