I hope that the Archdiocese seeks an individual who understands the
responsibility and expectation in being a representative of Goans in
general and their ethos in particular -- presuming that the
Archdiocese itself has a good sense of what said plan entails. One
would assume that this individual would be multi-faceted, and
multi-disciplined. In Goa, development plan, should include
neighboring villages and villagers, who either have something to
contribute in terms of skills that could marketed with pride, or
systems by which they can be trained to compete amidst the shifting
realities and vagaries of the market. The Catholic Church includes in
its religiosity many visual artifacts, which are are shall we say
income generators. This is a potential that behooves the Archdiocese
to tap into. In doing so, it appropriates for the Goan opportunities
to function in a tourist economy, but one that is conducted with
dignity. The other option is to continue maintaining the status quo,
of placing our pains at the feet of Jesus and saints in residence.
Point being: we have to help and be helped by forces through whose
graciousness, or charity, or callousness or plain neglect -- things
change with very little input from the aam aadmi or even the larger
intelligentia. The best representative could anyone, a Hindu, a Parsi,
a priest/nun/brother, bhot/bhottin/architect/planner (or other
combinations), Muslim, or whoever is the best pit bull (not joking)--
intellectually demanding, and a no-nonsense person. I am not being PC
here.
If I were a sculptor for instance, I would be looking at designing
unique statues, votives, candles, aarti stands/candelabrum's, etc.
There is no reason why Hindus artists should not get into this, as was
the case in centuries past. In this regard it is worth looking at the
work of Agnelo da Fonseca, and his expression of an Indian/Goan vein
in his art. This Dec 6, will be the 105th birth anniversary of this
son of San Estevam.
Failing which, after some time we will have yet another cause to
bemoan newer losses.
Tedna ami tavyeo pettouya ani mhunya, amcam Baban nagoilem. Dadai nam
ani puddyoi nam.
