National Level Commerce Fest, ARENA 2007-2008 (ENCLOSED PICTURES) The National Level Commerce Fest, ARENA 2007- 2008 organized by the Department of Commerce, St Xaviers College Mapusa jump-started with the theme, What you do is what defines you. On 5th of December 2007. It was visualized with an aim to showcase talents and to promote a sense of team spirit thereby encouraging a healthy competition. The event began with a prayer song sung by Ajiton Estebeiro and group and was compered by Ms Nafisa Barreto and Mr. Shezmon Madeira. The Principal, Professor Newman Fernandes in his address said that Arena was one of the many ambitious projects undertaken by the institution to help students cope with the ongoing competition in the business world and emphasized the importance of higher education and its demand in the employment sector of today. An event like Arena would see surge of talents of students which would help them to face the challenges and competitions in the outside world. said the Chief Guest Dr Mohan Sangodkar, Registrar of Goa University during the Inaugural session. The function progressed with the unveiling of the trophies by Mr. Sangodkar. The function concluded with a vote of thanks by Miss Merlyn Pereira, the student co-ordinator. The Participating colleges from Goa included MES College Zuarinagar, Fr Agnels College of Commerce and Arts Pilar, D.Ms College of Commerce-Assagao and outstation colleges included Briham Maharashtra College, Pune and St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. The competition took off with the first Nouvelle Aventure, in which participants had to conceptualise and present a business idea for an innovative service that would be economically and practically feasible. The off stage events included the Model Making competition based on the Boston Consultancy Group Matrix, a written test along the CAT examination called the Mock CAT(one of the three rounds of Numero Uno), the written preliminary round for the Brain Drain Quiz. and the Coat of Arms Model Judging. A Band from St Xaviers College who call themselves Three Dayz enthusiastically entertained the audience during the lunch break and was spontaneously accompanied by Alister Dsouza, a student of St Aloysious, Mangalore. The post lunch session comprised of three back to back events i.e. Brain Drain quiz, Print Ad, Case study. The Brain drain finals was a straight forward event testing their knowledge on various commerce related aspects ranging from general knowledge to CEO to mergers. It witnessed four colleges battling in the finals. Print Ad is to prepare a print ad along with an SMS promo. The concuding competition for Day 1 was The Case study (second round of the Numero Uno), it comprised of a case study given to the participants, in which they had to come up with an economical and practical solution within 2 hours to crack the case. Taking off on day2 of the Arena was the Wizard of Ads. Here participants Advertising and Marketing competence were tested as well as their Creativity and Innovative thinking. They were required to prepare a radio jingle and enact the ad on stage. The other event that took place in the morning was the Newspaper, an off stage event. Participants were given 2hrs to prepare an original newspaper based on the topic MERGERS, ACQUITIONS OR NEW VENTURES, which tested their editing, space management and literary skills. After the Tea break the much anticipated exciting event was held i.e. the stock shock for the ones who thought of having the potential to be a successful share trader, This event is based on the traditional trading scenario of the stock market where competing colleges had to battle it out in the 4 trading sessions. The Finals of the Coat of Arms provided a platform to demonstrate the requirements for success through their power point presentation along with the designing of a company letterhead, logo and emblem as well as the vision statement, depicting the companys philosophy. The final competition was the Stress interview which comprised the third and final part of the Numero Uno. The judges asked a series of rapid fire mind-boggling questions, sportingly answered by the participants who created quite hype among the audience. The valedictory function started off with a song by Ajiton and group followed by a Portuguese Dance by Nieta and Troupe, The Goan Mando by our Mansueto and group. The Principal congratulated all those who contributed in making the two day national event a big success. The chief guest for the function was Mr. Haresh Melwani who encouraged students to be entrepreneurs. In his address he said that such events should be encouraged and also gave tips to become successful entrepreneurs and have confidence in oneself Miss Merlyn Pereira, the student co-ordinator of the event presented the report of the two days. The much awaited finale to sum up the events were the results. St Aloysius College, Mangalore bagged the first spot in five events i.e. Brain Drain, Model Making, Coat of Arms, Wizard of Ads and Newspaper.D.Ms College of Commerce, Assagao Bagged the first spot in two events i.e. Nouvelle Aventure and Print Ad. Fr Agnels College of Commerce and Arts, Pilar bagged the first spot for stock Shock and Briham Maharashtra College, Pune bagged the first spot for Numero Uno St Aloysious College Mangalore was adjudged the overall winner of the Arena 07. This brought the two-day commerce fest to a grand end. Ending the function, Mr. Carmelito, co-ordinator of the event rendered his thanks to one all.
