It is a requirement of membership in the Church. Space did not present a
problem in the Gallile where little tribal settlements were sorrounded by vast
desert expanses. That option for disposal is a luxary in our part of the world:
combine that with our 'needs' for ritual, and one can just imagine the
discomfort experienced by early Hindu converts in Goa to the entire burial
process. I can believe every bit of what Ven describes, and more.
New urban stress now has us going from the silly - storage, not burial,
in above ground vaults, in the West, to the near profane act of removal after
just twelve months, as is done in Mahim, Bombay.
The unique Parsee way out represents a final act of charity - the feeding
of hungry birds. The last vulture has now left town, however, and they are
quite concerned, I am told. Jimmy Tata made sure he died in Paris and got
himself a decent burial, alongside his mother: the community could put the
fifty acres around the Tower of Silence in Bombay to similar good use.
Ven, this must end here, Christmas is coming. eric.
