Martyred or murdered ?
Believe me or not, I was to write about it hoping to get some information
about the circumstances in which the 7 lives lost in 1986. Some of the
questions that required answers were:
Are they really Martyrs ? Florian Vaz was martyred. Personal animosity would
not have been enough to kill him in cold blood.
Were they really Konkani supporters? Yes, Florian Vaz was. Took part in the
agitiation. Most Kunbis, Gawdis and the working classes were very much involved
in the agitation. Konkani, written in Roman script is their ONLY means of
communication. The dialect varied from Taluka to taluka but could be understood
across talukas. THEY CAN NEITHER READ NOR UNDERSTAND ANY OTHER LANGUAGE OR
SCRIPT.
What they were doing there at that time?m Floriano vaz had just gone home and
was eating lunch, when attacked by the police at 1.20 in the afternoon.
How do they die or got killed? Floriano was hammered with a lathi and shot
at. the shot missed him. He was then ordered to be shot with a rifle. When he
was flat on the ground, he was shot at point blank range through the stomach
and bled to death enroute to the hospital
Was it accidental or co-incidental ? It was pre-meditated. A business man
went and fetched the police in a PRIVATE matador Tempo.
If fighting involved, who started it? There was a lathi charge at a road
block near Floriano's house/Old Chogule College, at Gogol, Margao.
Was the fight political or communal or personal? It was a agitational
issue...road block.
If murdered, who killed them? Police Constable Rajaram G. Pawar, Gujarat
SRP on orders of Goa Police ASI Narayan Yetle.
What was the outcome of the police case? Case No.444/86 registered in the
Margao Town Police u/s 143,148, 307, 323,332 and 353. I believe these pertain
to unlawful assembly and rioting but this needs to be checked. The police case
was that there were about 400 to 500 rioters gathered on the site , resorted to
stone pelting and tried to grab police weapons, and hence police firing was
resorted to. [Report in GULAB of January, 1987 and in oHERALDo of end December,
1986.]
Whether the Killers were convicted/sentenced or set free? ASI Narayan yetle
was promoted to PSI and then to Police Inspector. he will most likely retire as
a Dy.SP . Rajaram Pawar went back to his state. He was anyway following orders
and is protected as doing his duty in good faith.
What happen to the case? Still open or died a natural death? Wanna file an
RTI application and find out?
Who was in the ruling Government- whether Cong., MGP or BJP? Congress led by
Pratapsingh Raoji Rane. Most agitations take place during his term ...draws
attention away form problems of Governance. Digu Kaka has refined the art of
the Rane. Tusk Force, Committees, study tours and Studious research add colour
to the isues. Digu is a Peshwa not a Shivaji. Thinks differently.
Can we label the ruling Govt as Communal? Why not? Kitem mhunntai re? Digu
Kaka was called SECULAR even when he was the No.2 Minister in the Parrikar-led
BJP government!!
What compensation did the victims or their family got from the Govt?
Bottatte. Nothing!
What about the tiatrists, did they help the families financially? Are the
Tiatrists a charitable organisation? Is Konkani a language of the Tiatr alone
They could stage a tiatr/show one each in North/South and easily raise Rs.1
lakh which was a big money 20 years ago. Joe, do not preach. Lead the way!
What about the church/Priests, did they involve in fund raising? Is Konkani
the Official Language of the Catholic community or of Goa. who got statehood,
Church or Goa. Did the church raise the money for others who have been killed
by the state? Did the Hindus raise money for the policeman killed by Matanhy's
men during meta Strips agitation? Did anyone condemn the murder of the
policeman? Did anyone raise money for Nilesh Naik who died because of Nylon-6,6
agitation? So many quaestions.
RLAF Romi Lipi Action Front: Why no ACTION then? RLAF, as far as I know was
born somewhere in 2005 or so. The Dalgado Konkani Akademi had raised the issue
before. Adv.Radharao Gracias had raise the question in the Assembly when he was
an MLA [1989-94, I think]. The issue has been simmering. The second World War
broke out in 1939 ...because of the simmering discontent over the forced
clauses in the treaty of WW-I in 1918 ...21 years later!!
What took them so long i.e. 20 years? Gestation. Babies are not bvorn in the
morning after the night before!
Is RLAF (with Tiatrist/Priests etc) unfairly using the dead as a weapon to
fight? Would you mourn Mahatrma Gandhi if he died of old age at say 115 years?
Is the nation unjustifiably using his death anniversary as Martyr's Day and the
UNO as World Peace Day? What about Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary? Unjust
advantage to Congress. Should someone shoot a BJP leader or a Shiv Sena leader
or UGDP leader to give them a level playing field?
Is that the best they could do? Can YOU do anything better? If so , please
state it on this forum.
Well, as I was preparing to seek information, I read on the Net today
(21/12/07) so also in the print edition of the GT. some information relating to
the incident 20 years ago.

Despite reading both the articles, I guess, some of the above questions will
always remain unanswered.
When everything else fails, Churchill fails, it seems everybody goes to God
or the dead.
These are my thoughts. I am not trying to open a new controversy.
I have respect for the dead. May their souls rest in peace.
COMMENT; You may not be opening a NEW controvery but just reviving an old
one. Now answer my question: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT KONKANI WRITTEN IN
ROMAN SCRIPT? a] Sleep over it?
b]Blame the RLAF/Tiatrists/Priests/DKA/KBM for sleeping over it? c] Blame the
Government d] Blame the Goan crab mentality or e] Do sopmething about it.
Take your pick ..... AND LET YOUR CONSCIENCE EVALUATE YOUR CHOICE.
