To Goanet -
Just got back from an impromptu press conference held in
Panjim this evening (Wed. Dec 26). Matanhy Saldanha (GMAS)
and Manohar Parrikar (BJP) addressed the (mostly) broadcast
news media. Some highlights:
- Manohar Parrikar dared the Digambar Kamat govt to
arrest Matanhy. Said that BJP will come out on the streets
in support of the GMAS Convener if he is arrested.
Demanded from the Goa govt that the FIR against
Matanhy be withdrawn immediately.
- Matanhy renewed his call for the tourists to stay away
from Goa beginning Dec 28 to show solidarity with Goans.
Said that they should sacrifice one year of fun so that they
can continue to enjoy Goa forever. He urged the tourists
to write to the anti-Goan Digambar Kamat govt expressing
their support to the anti-SEZ movement.
- Matanhy and Manohar both made it clear that no threat
of violence was made against tourists, that the target of
GMAS was and remains the SEZ policy of this corrupt govt,
that the agitation will be intensified.
The above is a quick, informal recap. Much more was said
and with considerable clarity. See your local TV for the telecast
of this press conference.
Also - the call by GMAS has had the intended impact. Cancellation
in bookings has been reported. This is over and above the
already depleted tourist demand for Goa this year. Lots of charters
haven't materialized and several have chosen Thailand over Goa.
Now if only the 50-people-packed-in-one-Qualis Indian boor
from MH, KA, GJ and DL would stay away !
Warm regards,
r
