The Mormugao Parliamentary Constituency Member of Parliament Mr Francisco
Sardinha won the November, 2007 bye election on one of the several promises viz
re-introduction of bull fights popularly known as "Dhirio" in the State .
This was hitherto banned by a High Court directive; and despite this the sport
continued on a sly sometimes with political patronage and the police looking
the other way, especially in the home turf of another "dhirio" lover the
Minister for Tourism, where an infuriated crowd of onlookers attacked the
police who tried to prevent the event.
But now there is further bad news which may dampen the spirits of "Dhirio"
lovers and the MP too. In a recent order of the Supreme Court just two day
before the Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu the "Jalikatu" bull fight traditional
game almost akin to our "dhirio ' has been banned on grounds of cruelty to
animals.
It may be noted that two days after "Pongal" a harvest festival scelebrated on
14th January, this year , in the Eastern State of India in Tamil Nadu the
owners bring their bulls in an arena and youth are expected to hold on these
fiery bulls by the tail and win prizes if they managed to do so or the owners
are awarded if the bulls run astray.
But there were reports that the bulls are induced with steroids etc to ensure
their fiery portents and hence this amounts to cruelty. No doubt it is an
ancient tradition in Tamil Nadu but given the commercial aspect and cruelty the
SC has apparently put its seal on this "Jakikatu".
Earlier there were guidelines issued by the High Court to ensure the continuity
of the game but with adequate safeguards. However the SC seems to have willed
otherwise.
It is obvious that Mr Francisco Sardinha will have to do a "volte face" .
Incidentally Mr Sardinha became a subject of ridicule for having fought the MP
bye election on the promise of restoring the "dhirios" and was castigated by
the PETA chief. The PETA People for the Ethical treatment of animals is an
organisation which ensures the ethical treatment of animals.
Incidentally, both Mr Francisco (Mickey) Pacheco Minister for Tourism another
lover of the "dhirio" alongwith Mr Francisco Sardinha will be the Chief Guest
and Guest of Honour at a felicitation function for Senior Citizens from Colva
Betalbatim and Seraulim organised by the Colva United Centre Kuwait at the
Colva Church Hall on 12th January, 2007. The function will also include a
presentation of HIV/AIDS awareness and a Konkani "tiatr" TUMI tumche dolle
ugddat directed by Mr Mario Menezes. This is as per the organising Chairman Mr
Alexander Fernandes.
It is likely that the duo may have to make their stands known to PETA officials
and the audio and visual media on the "dhirio" in the light of the Supreme
Court orders, as this order runs contrary to their avowed stand that "dhirios"
will be revived following introduction of a private members bill in Parliament.
