New Delhi, Panjim, Mumbai: The rape and molestation of two tourists in Goa in
the past three days has the tourism industry there worried.

On Friday night a British woman was allegedly raped by an unidentified man.

Police have also arrested one man for molesting a Russian national on January
8.

Goa has long been considered among the safest tourist destinations in the
country but now, the state has been shamed by assaults on two women tourists in
three days.

The second incident took place on Friday night in the state capital, Panjim,
where a 30-something British tourist was allegedly abducted and raped by an
unidentified man as she was taking a walk outside her hotel.

The incident happened just hours after the police arrested a shack-owner for
molesting a 27-year-old Russian tourist on January 8 in south Goa.

“The lady complained that at around 12.30 am, Agnelo Noronha followed her
when she was going to her hotel. Police arrested the person and complaint of
outraging her modesty has been lodged,” said Police Inspector (Verna PS), N
Raposo.

Goa receives more than two million tourists every year and a large chunk of
them are foreigners. Russians and Britons comprise most foreign tourists.

Locals fear such incidents could tarnish the image of the tourist paradise
permanently.

Articulataing their fears is South Goa Hoteliers Association’s secretary,
Pifran Fernandes who said, “This is an incident which should be condemned.
There is a definite effect on tourism.”

Goa, though, is just one on the many states in which tourism would be
impacted by crimes, particularly sexual crimes, against foreign tourists.

There have been several molestation and rape cases involving foreign tourists
reported from states like Rajasthan and Kerala, not even fifteen days into the
new year.

Tourism Minister Ambika Soni had said, “this affects our image as a country."

The Centre is now alarmed by the slew of such incidents and has decided to
review security measures at tourists spots. Ambika Soni would meet tourism
secretaries of various states on January 24.
