I am in full agreement with what Gilbert Lawrence has written. I also agree
with him when he says that the Hindutvavadis should not use the Inquisition to
stir up communal hatred. This is in line with what I said that I do not hold
the present day Christians responsible for the acts done in name of
Christianity by anyone else, either today or in the past.
Some of the historical points that Gilbert has made, I am not able to comment,
since they are not something that I am aware of.
What is needed is that the historical facts be stated properly. While the
intent of the Inquisition was to esnure that those converted to Christianity do
not lapse back to their earlier traditions, the Inquisition was also used to
force conversions. When there is no denial of these facts, using Inquisition to
stir up communal hatred does not become possible.
