Some days back, I had informed you about the release of a book by the famous
Goan Poet Manohar Sar Dessai
The 'PRINCE OF THE GOAN POETS. Atitle that he won in a competion organside
by our Clube Nacional when the Presidente was Bernardo Fernandes( known as
Benferds.
The release of the Book took place at the "Upper Deck" of Marvins Hotel
,near the Municipal Garden Garcia de Orta"
The MC was well know personality in such functions .Dr Ajay Waidya, who
with his small beard and dressed in a nice Kurta Pijama, made a hit himself
The whole funcition was conducted.naturally in Konkani
Being the starter of this book only because Manhoar was my great friend for
almost forty five years and he even composed a poem for our wedding (,.
Which unfortontely I lost,) and another which goes by the attachement with
his own handwriting. I was asked to deliver the Welcome Speech( see
attachment)
I will now report to you in short way the Release
Mrs Shakuntalla Bharne,recited the poem 'Surya Stuti" a himn to the Sun ,but
indirectly to God, who created the Sun.
Mrs Pramila ManoharSarDessai presided and released the book while the
cameras clicked and the cameras of the TVs reps recorded the event and the
audienence clapped.
Fr. Vasco do Rego S.J. a friend of the Poet presented the book with details
of it.
Jose Velho Pereira with his golden voice and accompanied by Savio Martires
and Carlos Menezes sang Sopon
You will ask me what sort of Sopon( dream) did Manhoar had ? here is the
story, he and more concanissts where going for a meeting of concaninst in
Kharwar and they took along group of musicians.In the coach itself, MS
asked Velho Pereira do sing a fado( the famous Portuguese folk song) and he
did it.But MS asked for an encore
He wished to compose a fado, never before translated into any other
language,
He could not find a paper, but fellow travelers, emptied their cigarette
packs and gave him FOUR
On them MS wrote the SOPON
I was never been sang before,so I call it a World Premiere.
Ramanand Joshi recited the patriotic poem Othra June, when at the actually
called Lohya souded the clarion for Liberation and soon was arrested
The Liberation was finally achived and by force on the 19th Dec 1962,
Mr Uday Bhenbre a long time friend of MS and with him took part in many
movements like that Pro Konkani and Anti Merger in Maharastra which lead to
the Opinion Poll demanded by Jack Sequeira and finally agreed after that by
Nehru.paid his tribute "Manohar, The Man"
Dr Anuradha Wagle, a Maharastrian married in Goa to the Family of Vaglo(
remember thos two jobs on the ground floor of Clube Nacional" recited a poem
of MD "Adieu, Paris" when he left Paris where at the centenarian University
of Sourbonne he did his doctorate
He took advavntate of his stay to visit many countries,,,even Finland,but he
could not visit Portugal, His own father Lackiman, who was a teacher in
Portuguese schools and even composed poems and translated into Portugues
those of his son, had been arrested and dumped in the jail of Aguada, Due to
this, in Paris , MS was under surveillaice of the Portuguese espionage
called PIDE and if he dared to visit Portugugal he would be dumptet at
Caxias or Peniche or Angola.,
Umesh Sardesai recited "The call of Konkani"
Finally to close this so intereting release m Fr,Loiola Pereira, first read
a message which had come from Washington(see attachement' from mr Nagvenkar.'Then
he recited the Poem "Meu Deus" translated into Portuguese by Laximan
SarDessai and close singing
"Khoim Pauló? Khuiso Tum" a poem of Manohar composed in honour of the
Blessed Jose Vas.
As this song was Never been sung before, I call it again,.a World Premiere
In fact it is to the wide world that we took this enterprise. Like any
battle soldiers fall dead, we too had two who went to Heaven to join Manohar
Berardo Pinto Pereira from Benaulim who dream to die and be buried in
Benaulim. And his dream was fulfilled !!
The other was Jorge Noronha whose contrinbution to this book was just
tremendous.as the did the translations into Portuguese and we are extremely
grateful to him.He died at this home a few hours after writing to us his
very last message , but without sending it,and his wife Livia did it.
