The largest democratic party in the world founded in 1885, the Indian National
Congress Party admitted MLA, of the Navelim and Curtorim Assembly
Constituencies in Goa viz Mr Churchill Alemao and Mr Alexio Lourenco
respectively into its party fold this afternoon.
This was following the merger of the Save Goa Front party on which ticket the
two were elected at the last hustings in June 2007 having fought a bitter
battle with the INC and the BJP one labelled as corrupt and communal the other
communal.
The INC however believes that "every party is defined by the people who are in
it. Over the course of its history, the Congress has been represented by the
most popular, most charismatic and most dynamic political figures -- and that
is a tradition that continues even today". This surely a thought to ponder.
Such walk in's and walk outs are history.
Meanwhile Mr Alemao is beleived to be satisfied with the INC having fulfilled
all the issues for which the Save Goa Front was constituted
party. Although the issue of official recognition to Konkani in Roman script
will prove a thorn in the days to come, if the BJP takes up this issue in right
earnest in the House to embarass the Government.
According to reports this writer received from party sources in the MGP there
is a clear attempt by Mr Digamber Kamat the CM who survived the second attempt,
to rid the INC slowly but surely of the influence of the MLA's of "MGP origin"
in the ruling coalition despite the unconditional support the Dhavalikar
brothers have inevitably had to extend to the coalition.
Thus Mr Pratapsing Raoji Rane the Speaker, Mr Dayanand Narvekar, Mr Pandurang
Madkaikar Mr Ravi Sitaram Naik all who have had their origins in the MGP may
have to suffer due to the new permutations and combinations of today, The
Cabinet reshuffle will follow......
Hoewever the fate of Mr Antanasio Babush Monseratte the unattached member and
support of the Dhavalikar brothers has yet to be decided. This could well be
after the Cabinet reshuffle. Their support and that of the other Independents
would merely be bonus to the eighteen + three = twenty one
But to assume that stability will reign supreme is a big question mark and the
post Cabinet reshuffle may dictate the third attempt to destablise the
Government. The ordinance through which the Goa Appropriation Bill was
promulgated needs to be passed by the House will be the first acid test of
survival of the Kamat Government.
No matter how much Mr Kamat lays the blame on the BJP for all the insecurity to
his seven month old Government it is the enemity within members of his flock
that could prove fatal for him in the coming days.
It may be noted that the next elections be it the Lok Sabha in May 2009 and any
election hitherto will now have to be contested after the Delimitation of the
Constituencies are in force. Many a present day MLA would therefore need to
re-organise his vote bank within the parameters of the new Assembly
constituencies. The NCP too could be etching out a larger plan for its future
knowing too well that a pre-poll alliance may not benefit it in the next
elections and their bargain for seat sharing may come a cropper as in the June
2007 elections.
