Dears,

Konkani Nirantari is finally took wing with a song. A brief inaugural
ceremony was held in which the Bishop poured frankincense on coal thus
symbolizing the spreading the fragrance of Konkani globally. With
blessing from Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza and the
cheers from the crowd, the record breaking attempt started on the dot
at 5.55. Keith Pullin, chief adjudicator of Guinness World Records was
present on the spot.

It was a spectacular moment, when the crowd joined Keith Pullin, the
chief adjudicator of Guinness World Records, in voicing out an
excitement filled countdown to the singing. The SRA Sisters group
began the proceedings with zest as the entire gathering was filled
with excitement.

The SRA Sisters launched the KONAKANI language and the Konkani
people's quest for the Guinness record at the crack of dawn on
Republic Day, 26 January, 2008. The SRA sister's troupe sang hymns and
the crowd too gently joined as they sang the most popular traditional
hymn "Somyak Dhinvasumya" (O give thanks to the Lord). The SRA sisters
team was led by Sr Juliet Lobo and music directed by Sr Ancilla
D'Mello.

After filling the still morning for 60 minutes with melodious voices
singing in our mother tongue, Konkani, the Sisters made way for the
local group from Shakti Nagar, Mangalore [where Kalangann amphitheatre
is located] to add music to the ears. The Shaktinagar group took over
the SRA Sisters troupe. In a systematic manner and with absolutely no
space for confusion, the group was seen silently taking the position
on the second stage. .

The well coordinated Paldane group sang well before making way for the
lacklustre group from Valencia, where a few voices drowned the others.
The best group so far was from the sleepy coastal village of
Moodbidri. The earlier Moodbidri team was led by Leena Pinto and its
music was directed by Herald Tauro.

The Moodbidri troupe took stage at 9.45 am here at Kalaangann and the
melodious voices of Moodbidri group begun waft through the air during
their hour-long performance. It was once again a calm and very
smooth, well-planned change-over from Valencia to Moodbidri.

This evening the GOA group led by KBM President Purnanand Chari will
take to the stage at 1810 hours [6.10 P.M.] while the Elvis Goes group
[including the RLAF Convenor, Wilson Mazarello's famous Wilmix and
Sharon] will take stage tomorrow at 2000 hours [8.00 P.M.] beyond the
current record of 36 hours before the Mandd Sobann group led by the
dynamic Eric Ozario sets the new record of 40 hours!

The air is festive with good will and cheer oozing from everyone
present at the venue. As the songs say so beautifully, there is no
Goan, Mangalorean, Karwari or Mumbaikar here ...just so many Konkani
people.

Mog asundi.
