Bhismacharya in chess fraternity, 90-year-old Bahusaheb Padasalgikar from
Nutan Buddhibal Mandal, Sangli, inaugurated the 2-day Symposium on
Pre-Primary & Primary School Education & Primary School Students Chess
Festival At International Centre, Dona Paula on Republic day. There were
street play, discussion on chess, sport, education as also different chess
tournaments. This event was organised by Taleigao Chess Academy and
International Centre Goa in association with Goa State Chess Association and
Cortalim Chess Club International Centre Goa at Dona Paula on Republic Day
January 26 & 27 2008.
Bhausaheb was felicitated at the inaugural function by Goa State Chess
Association Secretary Shri. Suhas Asnodkar. Other dignatories present at
this occasion were Brigadiuer (retd) N H Braganza, GM International Centre
and Dr Satish S. Thigale, Director Symbiosis, Pune.
"The Right Move" a book on articles on Chess and Education edited by
Shrikant Barve was released at this occasion.
Mr Manish Kamble, President of Taleigao Chess Academy welcomed and Mr
Shrikant Barve, secretary of Taleigao Chess Academy proposed the vote of
thanks. Mr Jovito Lopes compered.
Street play on the theme "Changes in our schooling over the years" were
presented by Little Lamb Primary School, Taleigoa and Vidhya Vikas Academy,
Margao.
On first day in the morning session Dr S S Thigale, director Symbiosis,
Pune, spoke on Diploma in Chess introduced by their institution in a
discussion "Chess and Education. Other panellist were Prof. Augusto Pinto,
Dempo College of Commerce and Economis and Vice President Goa State Chess
Association and Prof. S.U.Kamat, Dempe College. There Panellist also
answered questions raised by parents.
On 27th January in discussion "Sports should complement studies and parents
who find that their children have the potential to make big in sports need
to encourage them," was the overwhelming view at the symposium on "sports as
a career" Mr V M Prabhudesai, SAG's executive director, Mr Sameer Salgaocar,
president of Goa State Chess Association, Mr Tonito Botelho, GFA executive
member, Mr Nolel Lima Leitao, TV commentator and Goa Ranji star Robin D'Sousa
were the ones who expressed their views at the debate which was moderated by
Mr Jovito Lopes.
Later on a display of slide show by Vidya Vikas Academy of their plans and
achievements and how educational institution works.
In the afternoon session on Jan 26 Prof. Anil Samant, Saraswat Vidyalaya,
Mapusa, Prof. Vasundhara Varkhedkar, Dempe College, Panaji, Shri Ganesh
Manerikar interrogated with parents in marathi. In a discussion theme "
Buddhibal aani Vyaktimatva". On Jan 27 Shri Manohar Joshi spoke on
"Baalasangopan".
Parents of chess players Umang Kaisare Mr. Tanay Kaisare , Mrs. Sujata
Kaisare parents of Hari Mohanan took part in question answer type
discussion on "Grooming a Chess Player" on Jan 26 and on Jan 27 Parents of
Anurag Mhamal answered the quires raised by parents in Marathi. On Jan 26
evening two brilliant children from Goa shown their skills on the board.
1. Double world champ Ivana Maria Furtado drew with veteran Padasalgikar who
is considered the father of chess in India. The battle went for over 3
hours. Ivana could not convert her slight exchange advantage. Bhau had a
better space advantage. Finally Ivana agreed for a draw with Bishop and a
pawn against Bhau's two separated pawns. "Improve your Middle Game" was
veterans advice to world champ.
2. There was brilliant display on chess board skill by young Umang Kaisare
from Sharada Mandir, Miramar. He played simultaneous games against24
students. Rs. 500/- were on stake for the winner from the organiser. Umang
won all games except one. Game against Aniruddha Bhat from Child Care
School, Margao ended in a draw. Aniruddha Bhat received cash award of
Rs.150/- from the organiser. Umang upheld the trust reposed on him by the
organisers.
On Jan 27 evening Lightning Chess Tournament for special 8 invitees were
held. Vasant Naik proved his skills against young promising players like
Anurag Mhamal, Umang Kaisery and won all four games.
Later on Manashakti Prayog Kendra Lonavala and Vidhya Vikas Academy, Margao
had put there educational stall at the venue. They also made their
presentations at symposium.
The major attraction of the event was Primary School Students Chess
tournament. It was held in eight categories for I to IV, boys and girls
separately. 310 children from 55 schools that took part included one from
West Bengal, 3 from Kolhapur, 3 from Pune and 4 from Mumbai. Prizes for
first 10 in each category were distributed at the hands of Chief Guest
Bhausaheb Padasalgikar and Guest of Honour Sameer Salgaocar, (Vice President
AICF, President GSCA, ). List of Prize winners are given below.
