KONKANI DRAMA “SIR” – A SUBJECT WELL TAKEN

Two times GULAB award winner and popular Konkani stage artiste Agostinho
Temodu presented his Konkani drama ‘SIR’ in Kuwait to the audience who were in
splits with the comedy and side show with Comedian Selvy! Overall the director
had the message clear - being reverent is learning to respect, listen and
admire your peers! Whoever is able to develop these competencies is one
important step ahead of those who still believe that their selfish goals can be
achieved by forcing to get the admiration and respect of others! The
integrative role of leaders in and out of politics and the educational
institutions has been well defined and enacted by Comedian Agostinho's troupe.
As is common at the present times, one of the behavior traits most admired but
least remembered is reverence by today’s generation and the leadership
attitudes that win credibility are none too familiar to all, that might is
right. Whatever is the educational background is now secondary when it comes to
politics and leadership back home. How true to life!

With music by Norman Cardozo, appropriate sound system and stage settings,
‘SIR’ had all the ingredients of a tiatr well directed and satisfactorily
performed. Agostinho’s selected troupe comprising of veteran stage actors and
singers including Meena Leitao, Rohma, Osvi Viegas, T.Britton, Mathew Araujo,
Salu de Loutolim, Santan de Betalbatim, Joaquim Cabral, Oliveiro Gabrial,
Xavier Almeida with Comedian Selvy and Kuwait-based actor Adrian Goes put up
their best performance to the merriment of the cheering audience. Singers from
the troupe as well as songs by Kuwait-based Jose Rod, Marcus Vaz, Cajetan de
Sanvordem, Laurente Pereira and Edward Estibeiro were entertaining with
subjects of significant tact and valeur.

Revolving around the subject of ‘Reverence’ which has to do a lot with
respectfulness in addressing our peers, common among the ecclesiastic, but
instead, addresses the capacity to revere some kind of force and quality which
touches in grooming a young student to adulthood. Truth, Justice, Ethics are to
be breed in a young soul. Emanating from reverence is the ability to respect
our fellow man and it is this line of reasoning that is followed by the college
professor enacted by veteran stage artiste Mathew Araujo. “Respect for a
professor or teacher of late has been a forgotten virtue”, the director
Agostinho Temudo professes in his tiatr theme. One of the most beautiful
salulations of a teacher/professor to call him with dignity as ‘SIR’ is to
acknowledge the greatness of the human being who toils to educate us!
Conversely, an irreverent soul became arrogant, incapable of honoring anything
-- and to the tyrant in the guise of a ‘politician’, all others appear
inferior. Reverence calls for respect to that which is truly ethical and
appropriate. Respecting a tyrant, for example, is in fact groveling! Whoever
exerts power by the use of force is not worthy of trust and becomes so
distrustful to the point of becoming dependent on his/her own judgment -- and
thus more prone to committing errors. Isolation is a natural tendency for
tyrants who put themselves in such a high pedestal and that a fall is
inevitable! A lesson to be learned by all.

A one-minute silence and prayer was observed in fond rememberance of late
Sanny de Quepem. Marcus Vaz, in a specially composed song, praised the
attributes of late Sanny. May his soul rest in peace.

Earlier, at the commencement of the show, the organizers United Club of
Utorda-Kuwait introduced the chief guest, popular stage comedian Philip Pereira
and guest of honour Paul Pereira. In a very brief ceremony, the organizers
thanked everyone for their support and presented a memento to the director
Agostinho Temudo to the thunderous applause.

United Club of Utorda-Kuwait has the unique distinction of honouring Goans
among the community, specially from the tiatr and sports faternity - actors,
directors, musicians, and football players at the events and are credited to
organize the one-act Konkani play competitions and giving ample opportunities
to young and budding talents.

A number of Konkani tiatrs were announced during the 'interval' time to be
held in Kuwait and these include tiatrs by Salu Faleiro, Anil-Olga, M.Luis,
Mini Mario, Menino de Bandar, Roseferns, among others. Also an announcement
was made of Simon Gonsalves' much acclaimed Konkani lentern drama "Challis Dis
ani Challis Rati" to be held in Goa commencing 11th February 2008 to be staged
in Utorda, and later in Sanquelim, Margao, Panjim, Mapusa, etc.

Agostinho's penchant for comedy and singing is well known. Equally gifted
with composing skills and innovative presentations, Agostinho has produced and
released several Konkani VCD, audio albums and Tiatrs. His next directorial
venture is titled "POLICE".
