It is 21 years since the Goa, Daman & Diu Official Language Act,1987 was passed by the Legislative Assembly at the former Adilshah's palace and office of the Viceroy/Governor General of Estado da India Portuguesa [EIP] on 04 February, 1987. The Union Territory was in a state of total symbiosis as can be seen from the fact that Marathi and Gujarati entered the OLA, 1987 ...but Konkani written in the Roman script [as done by the vast majority of the agitators, mostly hailing from the poorer strata of Salcete and Mormugao rallied by Churchill Alemao and Luizinho Faleiro] was SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED by a deal. Adv. Uday Bhembre staged a walk out and took Luizinho with him. I doubt Luizinho knew what hit him them, besotted as he has always been with the advocate who, with the help of his cronies, now does all the thinking fro the Congress ...by heading its Think Tank or Vichar Vibhag. Luizinho now has time to ponder and do something for the Konkani he knows. I heard that he is a trustee/patron of the Mandd Sobann. Perhaps, Eric can help him to do something in Goa ...even as a franchisee of MS. Obviously, Congressmen and women cannot think for themselves. The advocate runs their BPO ...Vichar Vibhag... ever since OLA, 1987. Was that a part of the deal? Thankfully, ex-BJP Biwi No 2 is able to think for himself. The good news is that priests like Msgr.Dalgado, Fr.Thomas Stephens sj, Fr. Moreno de Souza sj and others have helped fellow Konknni and Goan people to preserve Konkani all through colonial days. The Vavreddeancho IXTT survived while other magazines for the middle class and the rich perished. That was where Konkani was , with the Vavreaddi or workers, the humble, simple honest citizens. In recent times, the expanding middle class has accepted Konkani as Amchi Bhas and not Kireadanchi bhas. The spurt of readership, and written material in Roman script, is a clear indicator of this. If one more sighn of this revival is needed, watch the footage of the Carnival floats in the Traditional, Family and Club catergories this year. Konkani Nirantari was not a single swallow. At the carnival parade, there are signs that Spring is here. when Goa's identity is challenge, there is only one hope: KONKANI. There is UNITY IN ADVERSITY as at no other time in one's life. On the next two Saturdays [9,16 February, 2008], there will be Traditional Dress Competition for Primary school students, Story telling competion for Middle school, Poster making [including collage] and painting competition for high School students at the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr, behind O' Coqueiro, Porvorim. On 01 March there will be a competition in decorative lamp/lampshade making [do at home and bring].
