>From John Fernandes Quepem
The villagers of Gaonkarwada and Devsa of Ward No.5 of Quepem Municipal
council to stage a Dharna in front of the Quepem Municipal council tomorrow
demanding removal of garbage from their ward illegally dumped by the QMC in
their ward.
That the Quepem Municipal council few days back illegally dumped the
collected garbage from Quepem town to Devsa. of Ward No.5 which is around 3
kms from Quepem town. The dumping of garbage irritated the villagers who by
letter dated 29/1/2008 called upon the Municipality to stop dumping garbage in
their ward and to remove the already dumped garbage within two days as it
causes health hazard in their locality. Copy of which was also forwarded to
the Health Officer Quepem.
That by reminder cum ultimatum dated 4/2/2008 the villagers stated that they
will agitate before the council unendingly from February 7th from 9.00 am
onward and will not allow the councilors/ chief officer to leave the council
office until their grievance are resolved.
Meanwhile saturation of garbage in Quepem resulted in getting rotten small
and increasing mosquitoes and flies in the towns, which may cause health
hazards in the days to come. It is seen that the increase of mosquitoes in
Quepem town force the vegetable vendors operating from the towns to take a
broom made up of paper in their hand to keep the flies away.

Children of Curchorem are suffering from due to dust pollution
Parents from Pontemol-Curchorem area are now a days are more concerned about
the health of their children rather then education of their children as
majority of children in those areas are now a days suffering with cough and
cold deliberating them to frequently visit doctors only to get a prescription
loaded with antibiotics.
Doctors when questioned about receiving cold cough opined that it is due to
dust pollution and the allergy caused due to the dust. The story continues in
all houses at pontemol leaving behind helpless parents with no option then to
curse the mining trucks plying in this area.
Pontemol-Curchorem from where this situation arose was once a peaceful
locality where people choose to settle has now a days turned into a dust clad
area. Informed one senior citizen . Thank to the man in uniform and zooming
mining truck.
If one goes to 3mts. wide internal road proceeding from main road going to
Sanvordem there are sign boards indicating No Entry for Mining truck . But
this sign board now a days have become a show piece with no mining truck
attention to it nor the men in uniform bother to implement it in force.
The villagers informed herald that previously during erstwhile government
there were police men round the clock to check that mining truck do not enter
the pontemol route. They were stationed at the main road junction near CADA
hall and also at the junction at Figuerado ground as the resident of this
locality objected for the transportation of mining truck though pontemol. But
now things have been drastically changed since last one year. Now a day in
spite of the No entry Notice board the mining truck transport starts on this
route around 5.30AM in the morning informed informed on senior citizen who had
to bear the heat of dust pollution while going for morning walk along with his
other colleague. .
The villagers says that the police are intentionally neglected this area and
are allowing the mining truck to operate through no entry zone as the police
gets regular hafta for the same.
The villagers speaking to this correspondent stated that if the situation
continues than they l have no option than to file a writ petition in the high
court.
