Unsung Goan Hero WITH the passing away of Lino Leitao at Dorval, Quebec in Canada on January 24, 2008, the Goan fraternity has lost a stalwart who rode like a colossus on the literary and Goas liberation front. Born in Varca and a student of Popular High School, Margao, Lino lived in Uganda in the 1960s prior to migrating Canada. He was a Goan-Canadian author. Lino was a prolific writer and a distinguished journalist whose works include The Gift of the Holy Cross as well as short stories and tales depicting in-depth cultural and social life of Goa. His articles and authored book has appeared in reputed international publications like Afro-Asian quarterly, Journal of Asian Literature by Michigan State University, The Toronto South Asia Review, New Zealands Pacific Quarterly, New Canadian Review, to mention a few. Needless to mention that Lino played a stellar role in Goas liberation movement leading a frontal attack (Satyagraha) on the Portuguese from the Belgaum side of the erstwhile border under the banner of the then Bhoodan Movement leader, Vinobha Bhave. He is survived by his wife Olga (Mecca) Telles who has also carved a niche for herself in the United Nations by her untiring services towards extending humanitarian relief to the downtrodden African countries. It is a pity that our government has not recognised the erudite deeds and achievements of the departed soul. He will go down in history as yet another unsung hero.
