To Goanet - Dr. Virgincar,
Allow me to strike a dissenting note. I will not sign that petition. Nor will I sign any petition from any Hindu or Christian group that demands curbing of anyone's right of expression. Not wanting to willfully injure the sentiments of a community is an admirable sentiment. On the other hand, one's faith ought not to be so fragile that it is blown away by every crosswind in one's path. In this specific instance, both the pictures originate from people widely respected within the Islamic tradition, not from polemics seeking outsiders. If the Muslims wish to live harmoniously in a democratic society, they must learn to live with slights now and then to their cherished symbols and beliefs. Same applies to Hindus and Christians (both of whom have a far better record in this department than the muslims). Today, scholars cannot even undertake an honest investigation of matters Islamic without inviting intimidation and threats, implied and real, to their lives. The recent instance of the "Bavarian Archive" is a case in point.
