Members of the legislatures and other public institutions swear an oath of allegiance to the Constitution and to uphold its provisions, which specifically include the integrity of the nation and equality of all citizens regardless of caste, creed,gender or origin. Moreover, any violation of these provisions by ordinary citizens also constitute an offence under prevailing criminal law. Any failure to take prompt and effective action against violators of these provisions will ultimately lead to the disintegration of our nation as has been the case with Yugoslavia and our neighbouring Pakistan. We must all realise this threat and ensure that any attempt to foment discord among our fellow-citizens is nipped in the bud before it is too late.
