ESG ORGANISES WEEKEND FILM SCREENINGS

Award winning critically acclaimed Hindi film screenings to be followed by discussion at the Maquinez Palace Audi 1 from Feb 29-March 2.

ESG, Feb 21, 2008, Panaji: A weekend of film screenings and discussion of award winning critically acclaimed Hindi cinema for cinefiles, fans, students, film industry professionals and citizens of Goa will be organised by the Entertainment Society of Goa at the Maquinez Palace Audi 1 from Feb 29-March 2. The event initiated by ESG as part of the year-round activity calendar, aims to promote a qualitative film culture and encourage a good cinema movement in Goa, by providing an opportunity for film fans to view the best of National and International cinema. Showcasing the event with five critically acclaimed award winning Hindi films, otherwise not available on the regular distribution networks, the selected films aim to portray a cultural objective of Indian cinema vis-à-vis the world at large. This initiative is also a step forward to encourage active dialogue about films, the culture of their origins and the universal values they represent.

Speaking to the press, General Manager, ESG, Shri Nikhil Desai said, "ESG will be selective in choosing films and will screen films that have won awards at film festivals. This is meant to encourage a creative dialogue, give an opportunity for people to see good films, and showcase cinema as an art form. These steps will serve the cultural objective of making available the best of cinema of the world to the public at large. Creating choices of film viewing is a first step in creating good audiences for good Cinema in the changed context of evolving digital technology."

Providing a visual treat at the weekend screenings will be `Frozen' (2007), directed by Shivajee Chandrabhusan (Dubai International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival), `Manorama Six Feet Under' (2007), directed by Navdeep Singh (Best Film Award at MIAAC Film Festival, New York), `1971' (2007) directed by Amrit Sagar (Osian's Cinefan Film Festival), Anuranan (2006) directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury (New York Arab and South Asian Film Festival, Tribeca Cinemas Bollywood and Beyond, Short listed for German Star of India Award, Stuttgart, Germany, Bite the Mango Film Festival, UK. Awards Received: The Puraskaram) and more.

Opening the weekend screenings on Feb 29 at 5.00pm, screenings on March 1-2 will begin at 2.30pm and 5.15pm respectively, and will be followed by panel discussions chaired by eminent experts and resource persons in the field. The open forum with the audience will focus on examining a film as a work of art, and how it represents social issues within the popular media culture. Audiences will also have an opportunity to voice their opinion on the films they view and comment on new Indian Cinema which today represents the cinema of social significance and artistic sincerity, within a modern, humane perspective. Meanwhile, ESG will begin registration inquiries from Feb 22 onwards on a first-come-first serve basis for a maximum of 200 participants only. A registration fee of Rs 50 per participant above 18 years of age will be collected at the time of submission, states the press note.
