INDIAN CITIZENS COMMITTEE
Back bone of Indian Community in Kuwait
The Indian Citizens Committee, Kuwait, one of the leading organisations
representing the vast Indian diaspora, was established on the dusty evening of
invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990. Set by a core group of committed Indians
led by eminent persona of Mr. H S Vedi as its chairman, the ICC was in the
forefront in the evacuation of 1,65,000 Indians from Kuwait onward to India.
Closely working with the community which lived under the dark shadow of
invasion, the ICC associated with Mr I. K. Gujral who was then the External
Affairs minister to help in the evacuation, a feat which was recognized by the
Indian Government. The former Indian Prime minister till date enjoys a close
interaction with the ICC.
Mr Vedi, alongwith prominent ICC members Abraham Mathew, Babji Rao, Prakash
Shaw, Andrew Thomas, Saifuddin Katubjiwala, Siddiqui Valiakath, Raman Sharma,
Madhu Warrier and others, opened channel of communication with the Iraqi
government to facilitate the onward journey of Indians. Not only this, the ICC
members helped organize food, medicine, security and provided morale booster to
the leaving Indian community and those who preferred to stay behind.
During more than eight month of invasion, the ICC remained station in Kuwait.
Since then, the ICC has been in the forefront in various welfare works
including relief and rehabilitation whenever some tragedy struck our country.
In addition, the ICC has become the major platform of interaction between the
local Indian community and with the Kuwaiti leadership mainly because the
respect and regards that its Chairman H S Vedi enjoys with the Royal family.
During the visit of HH Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Sabah, the Ruler of Kuwait to
India in June 2006, the ICC not only organized grand send off ceremony by the
Indians in Kuwait but its members were present on the streets of Delhi and at
all venue to welcome HH and his entourage on arrival in New Delhi
The ICC was represented at the ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan and
its Chairman was invited for the Banquet hosted by President APJ Abdul Kalam in
honour of the Kuwait Ruler and the delegation.
The ICC is engaged in various social works and has been helping Indian in
trouble and assuring that doors of justice were open for all of them. The ICC
members have held meetings with various Indian leadership including Delhi Chief
Minister Sheila Dikshit, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed,
Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhary and many others
At this year annual day function ICC had invited Union minister for steel,
chemicals, fertilizers and mines Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan to Kuwait as the Chief
Guest which was held at the Sheraton hotel Kuwait. The visit was aimed at
interaction of the community with the minister at one to one level, where
community members were free to discuss their personal problems facing each of
them.
ICC also organized a Dinner meet in honour of Mr. Shazada Hakimuddin Saheb
and felicitated him with Scroll of Honour for his services to humanity, on his
recent visit to Kuwait. The meet was aimed at Shazada Saheb showering his
blessings on the community members who had gathered in large number.
The ICC remains committed with its avowed aim to promote closer relationship
between India and Kuwait under the patronage of the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait
and the inspiring leadership of its Chairman H S Vedi by regular interaction,
meetings and conferences.
