Folks,
This competition was intentionally set up with as few rules as possible so that
those taking part could have fun. Entries started arriving a few hours after
the competition was announced and stopped only a few hours before the deadline.
Entries were from people who I have not read on Goanet as well as from our more
prolific writers. Right from the start, people asked if they could use words
with two or more hyphens. I had no objection to this and some suggestions
submitted, which I guess would fall under the category "honourable mentions"
are:
1) Date-of-out: Something that may be written on a release/parole/eviction
notice. (Nigel Britto).
2) Round-go-merry: Elation created due to a generous gesture in a pub.
(Aniruddha Sen Gupta)
3) Way-of-right: Conservative party's strategy. (Aniruddha Sen Gupta)
Choosing the winners was very difficult. I had to struggle with some very
interesting definitions. The best entries were those that are unprintable here.
Since people on Goanet have had similar exposure to the same environment, I had
several definitions for the same words. Reference-cross for example, had four
separate definitions.
In the end, I had to increase the number of winners to five. There was no
criteria in choosing the winners although I suspect that it may have wound up
with a Goa centric bias. Since this is one persons choice, the judgement was
subjective. The good news is that there is a sponsor for a challenge #2. If
people volunteer to judge the entries, we could come up with a better consensus
on the winning entries. I too would like volunteer judges as it would give me
the opportunity to take part in the competition. I am also looking for
suggestions for the next competition.
A donation for each hyphenated word attempted will be made to the Goa Sudharop
organization. Thankfully, not many people attempted more than ten words per
entry :-) I will, if there is enough interest, post a list of entries that
would qualify as "honourable mentions" in a few days.
After that long winded intro, here are the winners in no particular order.
eighth-one: Krishna Vasudev Yadav. (Pravin Sabnis)
reference-cross : the wayside cross often used in Goa as a landmark when giving
directions to someone. (Valerie Rodrigues)
known-well: San Joao Siolim well (George Pinto)
laced-strait: body of water which has suffered a rum spill. (Aniruddha Sen
Gupta)
Light-high: mildly intoxicated. (Santosh Helekar)
Can the winners please send me an email instructing me how/where to send their
prize of USD$ 100.00 each?
