H: Save Goa! -P.K. Jones, UK (letter to Editor) I would like to express my concern about Goa, during the last twelve years I have been coming as a tourist and an investor. It has not only changed but going filthier. There is stinking rubbish and garbage in towns and on beaches behind the shacks. It is so unhygienic, it is unbelievable! Do Goans have no respect for their environment? It is not a beautiful Goa as the media says. Long term tourists are having second thoughts and are looking for new, more cleaner and hygienic place. Short term tourists see the filth and rubbish and do not want to come back again. The percentage will go down more next season. Would the tourism minister explain to us regarding where all the tourism revenue goes? Surely it does not go into infrastructure and a cleaner Goa.. Save Goa before it is too late.
[ Where the money goes?? Tourism Minister?? - Jones, take a trip to Benaulim's prized bull-fights. The fattest bull is your answer] ** NT: Nuisance on Beaches - Samir Heble via e-mail (letter to Editor) IT is indeed a sad scene that beach umbrellas have begun encroaching on public beaches. I hope we are not evolving into a narcissistic society, a society more interested in enriching individual purses than in Goa's natural beauty. Some years ago when Mr. Bill Clinton had visited the Taj on his official tour, he had remarked: "There are only two types of tourists, those who have visited the Taj and those who haven't. At that time, I had the same feelings for Goa too. I do want to believe the same now too. Our innocent children want to run around and play on our beaches, unhindered by our rich umbrellas,. We yearn to enjoy the serenity of our uncluttered beaches too. Simple can be beautiful. Simple can be soothing. Let's keep Goa simple and clean and make it even richer. [The life membership form of a simple yet effective & determined 'political will' that will keep Goa simple, clean and well managed is in the post already. Simple to fill in. Should not be too difficult to get thro' the slot of the post box. Try it Dr. Heble???] ** TCP files case on hill cutting - Herald 5/3/08 (staff reporter) Panjim, March 14 - TCP has filed a case under section 17A for illegal hill cutting at Tollem, Aldona, while the district administration stopped the work. According to North Goa Collectorate sources, the hill-cutting was being undertaken in a private property and alleged suspected the involvement of a ZP member. Work was being carried out in the night under cover of darkness. On receipt of a complaint, the administration along with sub-divisional magistrate, Bardez stopped the hill cutting and seized the bulldozer at the site. [ A complaint was lodged with the TCP department in the morning ( 4/March) by a local resident of mass scale tree felling and hill cutting to make plots, otherwise in the cover of the night for last almost 15 days, in broad daylight on this day probably having been emboldened. I get a call at 3 p.m. that nothing is happening, that the work is merrily going on. I alerted the Collector who moved so fast on the sleeping TCP, Dy. Collector, Mapusa and the police, that the culprit Mr. Freddy Fernandes, the ZP member was caught with his pants down. Come next election, he will probably contest the Aldona seat on the Congress ticket (now that his mentor Dayanand Narvekar will be moving to the new Constituency of Porvorim) and will probably win too. Its time to take revenge . Goa ! here I come] ** NT: Foreign tourists' arrival below expectation.
