The following letter to the Editor appeared today (March 25, 2008) in two
dailies - in Herald under the heading "Midnight Fireworks in Anjuna" and in
Gomantak Times wth a cartoon 'Blam, blam, blam' under the heading "Drugs, loud
music, now it's fireworks menace at Anjuna.
"Midnight Fireworks in Anjuna" /
"Blam, blam, blam - Drugs, loud music, now it's fireworks"
In order to lead a healthy life, it is essential that we give the required
rest to our bodies. Look at the birds they toil hard in search of their
food, fly all day long but invariably return to retire to their nests by
sundown. And what do we do? We burn the midnight oil and ruin our lives.
There is a Konkani saying: "Vaitt ieta tem boreak"! The recent Scarlet case
has had a significant impact on the lives of Anjunkars.
Now that it has been made mandatory to close down
shacks/shops/bar-n-restaurants and bring all activities to a halt before
midnight, many will find time to relax something they could not earlier
afford due to night business.
However, there is another menace which has cropped up in Anjuna - fireworks
display at night - mostly by foreign tourists (something they cannot do in
their own land), in connection with birthday celebrations, wedding
anniversaries, etc. The fireworks are pleasing to the eye but become a
nuisance and health-hazard to the ears, especially when lit in the middle of
the night, sometimes even at two or three in the morning. The sound not only
wakes us but also steals our sleep.
If we, Anjunkars, prolong our social functions, including church-arranged
functions, beyond 10:30 p.m., we receive phone calls from the police and are
asked to stop playing the music. Why can't Anjuna police visit the site(s) of
fireworks, which are lit after 10:30 pm and put an end to the menace?
Fireworks should be measured with the same yardstick as that of sound pollution
because it produces bombing-type debilitating sound.
Will the authorities concerned treat fireworks in the same category as that
of sound pollution and bring an end to the fireworks menace that has invaded
Anjuna so we, Anjunkars, can sleep in peace rather than wake up to the sound of
bombs and think we are in a war zone?
