8 years to stop the sea level rise. With India doing nothing but lip service to the cause of climate change, our coastal cities face imminent danger.
Greenpeace on the 25th of March is launching a campaign to get the residents of our coastal cities involved and to show how personal the problem actually is! We want our elected representatives namely our Members of Parliament to start speaking about the issue and raise questions in Parliament. The campaign "Which side of the Line are you on?" is a 6-city drive. The cities participating are Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Puri and Panaji. Our volunteers in each of these cities will kick start the drive by meeting citizens who reside along the coast and getting them to sign on postcards for their MP's asking him to take action now. Later on in the week Greenpeace will also put up signs on the beach indicating the dangers of sea level rise. Greenpeace will also post eviction notices dated 2050 on buildings along the coastlines of these cities. The message being that the buildings will cease to exist if we don't speak up now. Later on in the drive Greenpeace will organize 3-day kiosks for residents to sign up refusing to become climate refugees. The kiosks will be at different locations along the coast in the cities and citizens can also sign the postcards at these points. In April the drive will culminate in a 6-city Padhyatra or a solidarity march. The march will be done simultaneously across the country and will also see a redrawing of the coast-line as we know it. The Padhyatra will have residents cutting across age groups including celebrities from your cities.
