Goa sulks for being left out NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, April 6 The decision of the Congress high command and the Prime
Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, not to induct any of the Goan members of
Parliament in the cabinet during the reshuffle of the Union cabinet carried out
today in New Delhi has taken the state Congress by surprise.
The Congressmen had been expecting either of the two Goan MPs to be included
in the cabinet but the decision of the party leadership to ignore the claim of
the state has surprised them.
âWe are surprised at the step-motherly treatment meted out to Goa by the
party and want them to do damage control before it was too late,â said a
senior Congress leader who did not want to be identified.
Another senior Congress leader said that injustice has been done to Goa,
despite it being a state, and Congressmen at large, adding that it was the
right of the state and Congress to get a representation in the government. He
further said that earlier whenever Congress was in power the state was always
represented in the cabinet and this was for the first time that Goaâs claims
have been ignored.
A senior office-bearer of Goa pradesh Congress committee said that
expectations of the party men are always high when it is power and that
everybody wants that at least one of its MPs be inducted in the Union cabinet,
which would have help in better and faster development of the state, ahead of
parliamentary elections to be held in less than a yearâs time from now.
Meanwhile, the GPCC has decided to raise the issue of step-motherly treatment
to the state with the all-India Congress committee general-secretary, Mr B K
Hariprasad, during his visit to the state on Tuesday and present memorandum to
him to convey the sad feelings of the state to the party high command on Goa
being ignored in the cabinet reshuffle and urge the high command to immediately
induct one of Goan MPs in the Union cabinet.
